Umpiring Resources

All participants in hockey should be aware of the rules and are expected to perform according to the rules. The rules for hockey are always being updated to reflect the best practice and promote safety for all involved.

Any changes to the rules of hockey can be found in the links below.

2020 Rules updates for Junior games

  • Rule 15 (12): All Junior Grades including U9, where at least one team does not have a goal keeper, that game will not play short corners, and long corners will replace them. Games where both teams have a Goal Keeper will play normal Penalty Corner rules.

  • If a Penalty Stroke is awarded in a junior game against a team that does not have a Goal Keeper, the Penalty Stroke is taken either with a player with their own face mask (not a shared mask) as the defender or with no defender (open goal mouth).

  • Rule 23 (1): No player shall take part in the semi-finals and finals unless having been registered and played at least four (4) fixture games in each of four (4) separate sets of fixture rounds for the relevant fixture section (senior grass, senior turf, masters or juniors) with their club during the season.

  • Rule 12 (1): Coaches in Under 11C, D & E shall be permitted for the full shortened season of fixtures to take to the field to assist teams in these Under 11 hockey (i.e. Full Field) divisions. The coaches who are on the field must position themselves between the two 25 yard lines only when on the field, to insure that they do not interfere with the play or umpiring of the game.

2020 Rules update for Senior games

  • Rule 15 (12): All Senior (Turf, Grass, Masters) teams may play with 11 field players, if they do not have a fully kitted goal keeper. If they chose to play without a Goal Keeper all normal rules apply
  • Division 1 and Division 2 will be played in four quarters of 17.5 minutes per quarter. All other senior divisions are 35 minute halves.
  • Players must remove, cover or tape jewellery that is dangerous to others (including all large and/or heavy jewellery and all watches). Small jewellery can be worn if it doesn't cause a danger to other players
